Dennis Andries

Dennis Andries ( born November 5, 1953 in Georgetown, Guyana ) is a former world champion boxer from Guyana.

Career

In 1978 the powerful Andries in the UK his professional career, which for years did not come from the place, as he repeatedly lost in the first few years of his career against unknown opponents. He had a mixed record of 17-6-1 in 1983 when he won the British title in the light heavyweight division. He defended this twice successfully against Tom Collins, who had beaten him earlier in his career and later became European champions, and began a winning streak that on 30 April 1986 at winning the WBC title against but not particularly prestigious American JB Williamson culminated in London.

In March 1987, he encountered one of the greats of boxing history, Thomas Hearns. Hearns fought at that time actually in the middleweight division, but still won almost every round against Andries and won by TKO in the tenth round. Andries got for his courageous performance but good reviews, the fight was visually quite balanced.

In 1988, he was able to defeat the respected former world champion Bobby Czyz in his home state of New Jersey on points. On 21 February 1989, he won back the vacant WBC title at the age of 35 years now against the Americans Tony Willis and then met with the undefeated hard-hitting Australian Jeff Harding, who influenced his career decisively. In a hard-fought fight in Atlantic City, he lost in the twelfth and final round on points leader nor by technical knockout.

After two building struggles he went the following year to the rematch to Australia and defeated Harding in turn by knockout.
