Dennis Coffey

Dennis James Coffey (* November 1940 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American session guitarist, who was particularly known for his work as a session guitarist for the Funk Brothers for the record label Motown Records from 1967.

There he played at recordings for The Temptations ( Cloud Nine ) or the Isley Brothers ( It's Your Thing ) with the typical for his guitar work wah -wah effect. His work can also be heard on Marvin Gaye's I Want You, RJ 's Latest Arrival, The Jackson Five and David Ruffin.

He also recorded with fusion and jazz -rock for the label Sussex. In 1971 he had his own hit with the instrumental title Scorpio Dennis Coffey & The Detroit as Guitar band. The single reached number 6 of the pop charts in the United States and sold over a million times. The follow-up single Taurus yet reached No. 18 the Hot 100 With two albums, Evolution and Goin ' For Myself, he also came in 1972 in the album charts.

Coffey remained with the label Sussex until 1975, when he moved to West Bound. He gave several singles and LPs as a performer out with "Wings of Fire". He became popular in the British jazz-funk scene in 1977 and produced and co-produced this year CJ & Co. and landed another hit with Devil 's Gun.

In the 1980s, Coffey produced an album for high fashion and worked with Mike Theodore (with whom he has worked since 1971) and Kashif. His last album was released in 1990, Under The Moonlight.
