Dennis is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts in the United States. The population is 15,793 (as of 2000).
History
Dennis and in 1639 as part of the village Yarmouth. 1793, separated and was officially independent. The place was named after a resident and minister named Josiah Dennis. There was not enough land for agriculture, so the seafaring became the main source of income of the place, especially around the Shiverick Shipyard. Today, Dennis is a popular seaside destination with its colonial stately residential properties along the northern coast of Cape Cod Bay and its picturesque beaches along the southern Nantucket Sound. The Cape Playhouse in northern Dennis is the oldest summer theater in the United States.
Geography
Dennis extends across the width of Cape Cod to the Cape Cod Bay to the north, in the northeast of Brewster, Harwich in the South East and in the West Yarmouth. The village is located about sixteen kilometers east of Barnstable thirty-eight kilometers east of the Sagamore Bridge and hundred twenty five kilometers southeast of Boston. The town includes the villages of Dennis Dennis Village (North Dennis ), Dennis Port, East Dennis, South Dennis and West Dennis. Dennis is located on the eastern banks of the Bass River, which divides the city almost in half. To the north is the bay Sesuit Harbor, in the South West Dennis Harbor. The area of Scargo Lakes and Hills in Dennis Scargo be connected to Indian culture. The Legend of the Origin of the lake was the idea for a children's book and a cultural narrative, the "Legend of Scargo ". While West Dennis actually lies west of Dennis Port, it is south of South Dennis. East Dennis is located north of South Dennis and Dennis lies on the western coast of West to East Dennis.
Traffic
Dennis is crossed from east to west by three main roads of Cape Cod, U.S. Highway 6, the Massachusetts Route 6A and the Massachusetts Route 28 and the Massachusetts Route 134, which crosses the city from the Massachusetts Route 28 to the Massachusetts Route 6A. The Cape 's Bay Colony Rail officially ends in place. The end point is also the starting point of the Cape Code - bike lane, a bicycle lane running along the Capes Wellfleet along the former railroad right of it.
