Deon Hemmings

Deon Hemmings ( born October 9, 1968 Saint Ann Parish ) is a former Jamaican hurdler and Olympic champion.

Hemmings won the bronze medal in 1997 in Athens and the silver medal in 1999 in Seville, the bronze medal at the world championships in the discipline 400 - meter hurdles in 1995 in Gothenburg. 1997 in Athens, she won also with the Jamaican 4 x 400 - meter relay bronze medal. At the Commonwealth Games in 1994 in Victoria, she won the silver medal behind Sally Gunnell (ENG ) and before Debbie -Ann Parris (JAM ) in the 400 - meter hurdles.

At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, she won the gold medal in front of the two U.S. women Kim Batten and Tonja Buford - Bailey in the 400 - meter hurdles. This was the first Olympic gold medal, which was awarded a woman for Jamaica.

At the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000, she won in the same discipline the silver medal, behind Irina Priwalowa (RUS ) and before Nezha Bidouane (MAR ) and the team silver medal in the 4 x 400 - meter relay along with teammates Sandie Richards, Catherine Scott - Pomales and Lorraine Graham.

1996 and 2000, Hemmings was voted Jamaica's Athlete of the Year; 2000 together with Lorraine Graham.
