Deoxypyridinoline is a degradation product of bone collagen. It is excreted by the kidneys in the urine. The indication for investigation in this matter arises from a question regarding an increased rate of bone turnover. The concentration of deoxypyridinoline in the urine is increased, for example in primary hyperparathyroidism, bone metastases, and Paget's disease.
