Deoxyribose is an existing five carbon atoms sugar, a pentose. Unlike the ribose with the 2- deoxyribose the OH - group on the second carbon atom by a hydrogen atom substituted ( deoxy means without oxygen). In aqueous solution it is present predominantly as Desoxyribopyranose.
Deoxyribose is a basic building block of deoxyribonucleic acid ( DNA) and was discovered in 1929 by Phoebus Levene.
