Dépanneur

A Dépanneur is essentially a parallel to the German Kiosk in Québec.

In the past it was banned Canadian supermarkets, beer and wine to sell, so customers find were the Dépanneur. Meanwhile, supermarkets are allowed to sell beer and wine, so it has acquired an extra license, but other alcoholic beverages remain specialty stores - the SAQ ( Société des alcools du Québec ) - Reserved. The Dépanneurs survived due to the cutthroat competition of supermarkets with each other, however.

Like most German kiosks also are the most Dépanneurs privately owned, adjoining rooms but mostly serve the owners as a home. The individual Dépanneurs are mutually usually independent, and are often of immigrants ( Chinese and Hindu are among the most represented ) operated. The whole family is often involved in the operation.

In addition to the independent Dépanneurs there are commercial chains such as Couche - Tard ( " For those who go to bed late " ) in Quebec City with about 680 stores, including Mac's part, which are represented mainly in Ontario with branch offices in 1038. With offices in the U.S., known there as in Ontario Convenience Store, Couche - Tard has about 2,500 stores.
