Department of Motor Vehicles

Department of Motor Vehicles ( DMV short ) is the commonly used name of the U.S. motor vehicle registration office. The DMV is operated under the responsibility of the individual states and may partly have other official name (eg Pennsylvania Department of Transportation).

Tasks

Due to the federal jurisdiction, the tasks of the DMV may differ to some extent.

Vehicle registration (registration)

One of the tasks of the DMV is the registration of vehicles, including issuance of number plates. License plates ( one's name ) will also be assigned by the DMV for an annual fee ( between 10-30 dollars). For the registration, a certificate of insurance and a valid State Inspection is required, which is carried out in some states also by the DMV. The authorization shall be granted for one or two years, after which it is replaced.

Driver's license ( driver's license )

The DMV is also responsible for the production of driving licenses. At the DMV both the theoretical are stored ( on the computer) as well as the practical exam. The license is limited in time ( up to five years ) issued, after this (without testing) renew. In the U.S., the driver's license is the predominantly used means card, since it also the current ( detected ) residence is noted. In this respect, the DMV also assumes the function of the Residents' Registration Office. The social security number is now no longer mentioned on the license, in order to prevent abuse.
