Dercylidas

Derkylidas ( incorrect spelling Dercyllidas, also Derkellidas ) was a military leader of the Spartans in 5 / 4 Century BC

After Derkylidas had 411 BC conquered the cities of Abydos and Lampsacus for Sparta, he was for a time Harmost (commander of the troops ) in Abydos. In the initial phase of the Spartan -Persian War, he took 399 BC the dispute between the Persian satraps ( governors ) Pharnabazos and Tissaphernes and fell in Aeolis, where he held a number of cities in a few days. After it concluded a truce with Pharnabazos, he marched in the spring of 398 in the peninsula Chersonese (today Gallipoli ) whose inhabitants Sparta had asked for protection against the predatory incursions of the Thracians, and was cross- build across the Isthmus a protective wall. After the subsequent intake of Atarneus Lesbos opposite, he was ordered to march into Caria and there to threaten the goods of Tissaphernes.

When King Agesilaus II 396 the war intensified, and even came up with a new army to Asia, Derkylidas remained some time with him. However, 394 annihilated a Persian fleet, led by the Athenian Conon, the Spartan fleet off Cnidus, and with it the basis of the overseas power of Sparta. Derkylidas could preserve the Hellespont nor Sparta by his fortitude and prudence Abydos and Sestos. Nevertheless, he had to relinquish the post of 390 harmosts in Abydos to Anaxibios who had known how to gain favor with the ephors. From then on Derkylidas is no longer mentioned.
