Derek Dougan

Alexander Derek Dougan ( born January 20, 1938 in Belfast, † 23 June 2007), called The Doog, was an Irish football player. He played in the 50s and 60s on the position of center forward.

Dougan began his career in the Irish League in 1954 when the Northern Irish football club Lisburn Distillery. In 1957 he moved to FC Portsmouth in the Football League Division 1 From 1959 he played in this English top three seasons for the Blackburn Rovers and then for Aston Villa ( 1961-1963 ). From 1963 to 1976 he was with Peterborough United ( until 1965, 3rd Division ), but then again in the top league for Leicester City (1965 to 1967) and Wolverhampton Wanderers under contract. During the nine years with the Wolves he was loaned among others in the American Football League and in the Republic of Ireland. From 1958 to 1973 he played in the Northern Ireland national team. After the end of his active career, he served as player-manager of Kettering Town.

He scored 222 goals in 546 games. No other Northern Irish player has scored more goals in the English league. He also met for Distillery ( 17 times ), while he completed only a friendly match for Shamrock Rovers according to recent findings. This was important because on that day on Dougan initiative a pan - Irish selection in the Rovers jersey to one, albeit unofficial international match against Brazil took. Nevertheless Dougan probably not one of the players with more than 200 Erstligatoren, even if the two USA trip are still being evaluated.
