Derek Humble

Derek Humble ( born May 6, 1931 in Livingston, Durham, England; † February 22, 1971 ) was a British saxophonist and clarinetist of modern jazz.

Work

Derek Humble began his musical career as a teenager and toured with the bands of Teddy Foster. In 1950 he played with Kathy Stobart, 1951 at Vic Lewis and Jack Parnell 1952. From 1953 to 1956 he was a member of the band of Ronnie Scott and was involved in recordings by Tony Crombie, Victor Feldman, Arnold Ross, Kenny Graham and Jimmy Deuchar in the 1950s. In 1956 he played with Oscar Rabin, then he returned for a U.S. tour back to Scott. From 1957 to 1967 Humble was a member of the orchestra of Kurt Edelhagen in Cologne, he also played in this time with Heinz Kretzschmar and Dusko Goykovich. In 1961, he also worked with Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, shortly after he became the leading alto saxophonist in the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band. Until 1968 he went on tour with this band; During this time he was seriously injured in a fight in Cologne. Phil Woods took over from time to time his part in the Clarke - Boland band until he got back. In 1969 he was still playing with Gordon Beck, 1970 again at Clarke - Boland, although he was no longer able to fill his role. Back in London, he worked briefly with the Phil Seamen quartet; Humble shortly thereafter died.
