Derik ( Syro -Aramaic ܖ ܪ ܝ ܟ ܐ Dêrike, Kurdish Derika Çiyayê Mazi ) is a city and the name of a district of the Turkish province of Mardin in southeastern Anatolia. The city has 20,266 Derik and the county 58 213 inhabitants ( 2010). Derik is in the northwest of the province and borders the provinces of Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa.

Derik was founded in the years 1390-1400 and is located 780 m above sea level. In the district, there are many Christian churches. The once numerous Christian Syrians and Armenians were murdered or deported in 1915 for the most part. Today live in Derik Kurds and Turks.

Attractions

Area attractions include the castle Rabat (Kurdish: Qala Rebete ) a built in Roman times on a mountain castle and the Qesra Qenco, an approximately 30 km from Derik remote castle, which was built in the late 19th century by the landowners family of Qenco whose current leader Ahmet Türk is.

Derik is famous for its olives. In about two -thirds of the city's area grow olive trees. Even the name of the local journal " Zeytindali " ( dt: Olive branch ) illustrates the presence of olive culture in Derik. In addition to olive growing here pomegranates, various fig varieties, apricots, peaches, almonds, and many other fruits.

Derik is surrounded on all three sides by mountains. The highest mountain is Turcel. These mountains were for safety reasons, because they granted the guerrillas of the PKK shelter cleared in the 90s. Currently running a campaign for reforestation.

Working position

The inhabitants are employed in Derik mostly in agriculture. Almost every family has a piece of land on which they grow their own supply of fruit and vegetables. Many families are moving in the summer as a seasonal worker in the metropolitan areas of the Black Sea coast or in the big cities such as Istanbul and Izmir. In recent years the service sector has grown.
