Dermot Earley, Snr

Dermot Earley ( Irish: Diarmuid Ó Mochóir; born February 24, 1948 in Gortaganny, County Roscommon, Ireland, † 23 June 2010) was an Irish Gaelic football player and as a lieutenant general until shortly before his death, chief of staff of the Irish army.

Biography

Military career

Earley resigned after the school in 1965 as a cadet in the Irish Defence Forces ( na hÉireann Óglaigh ) a. Between 1975 and 1977 he was an officer at a UN mission in the Middle East. He was among the first soldiers in the erected in March 1980 Special Forces Army Ranger Wing ( Sciathán Fianóglach to airm ) were used. Between 1982 and 1983 he was an officer with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL ).

According to uses within the Irish armed forces Earley from 1987 to 1991, deputy military adviser to UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. After his promotion to lieutenant colonel in 1995, he became commander of the 27th Infantry Battalion at the inner- Irish border. His subsequent promotions were made in 2001 to colonel in December 2003 to brigadier general and major general in March 2004.

In April 2007 he was promoted to lieutenant general and as successor by Lieutenant General James Sreenan Chief of the General Staff ( Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces ) appointed. He continued in this function until June 13, 2010, when he went into early retirement for health reasons. Was succeeded by Major General Sean McCann.

Sports career

Dermot Earley was also an outstanding Gaelic football player and played for about 20 years for the clubs Glavey Michael 's GAA and Sarsfields GAA Kildare in midfield ( Lár na Pairce ). At the same time he was one of matches between counties from 1965 to 1985 the team of the County Roscommon, Roscommon GAA. With this he won in 1972, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1985 five times the Connacht Senior Football Championship and 1978/79 the Cup of the National Football League.
