Derny

A Derny is a lightweight motorcycle for pacing services in cycling.

Development

The first Derny was constructed in 1938 by former racing driver Roger Derny to be used on sections of the classic cycling race Paris - Bordeaux for pacemaker services. The manufacturing companies Derny Roger & Fils, based in Paris was closed down in 1958, but the name for these lightweight motorcycles taken.

" Burdin Derny " was the name for the successor model, the Alain Burdin produced in the outskirts of Paris and sold throughout Europe. The mid-1980s he set his production for reasons of age. The most common current Dernymodell is produced in Belgium since the mid-1990s by Arie Simon and is common on racing tracks in more than 20 nations.

Construction

Dernys have hardly changed since its invention to the present day and are so constructed that can achieve a speed of about a maximum of 80 kilometers per hour with them. The engine power is about 7 hp. In order to achieve the necessary synchronization, the pacemaker (driver) must physically participate by additional force to the crank, which is connected by a rigid gear with the rear hub. The racer was in the lee of a Dernys a power saving of 30 to 40 percent. Large translations can occur "easier" at high speeds, but have the disadvantage that they make it difficult to start. Therefore, the Derny is also often used by many professional cyclists in training for " curling ".
