Deroceras

Deroceras praecox

The slugs - genus Deroceras ( formerly known as Agriolimax Mörch, 1865) belongs to the order of the lung worm.

Features

Most species of the genus Deroceras are relatively small to medium in size with a maximum body length of 60 mm. The body is rather slender and spindle-shaped at rest. The greatest width is to be found in the area of the jacket. This takes about one third to one almost half of the body. On the rear part of the back, a weak keel is formed, but clearly comes to light only during contraction. The blowhole is located in the back of the jacket. The color is uniform or with stains that may occur in some species merge into a reticulated ornament; but the ornamentation is not regular.

Life, the occurrence and distribution

The species of the genus were originally Holarctic and with a few species also common in the highlands of Abyssinia. Some species have been abducted today but almost worldwide. The species of the genus Deroceras feed mainly on green, fresh plants. Adapted to the men, that is synanthropic species are therefore often classified as a pest. This is especially true on Deroceras reticulatum.

System

The species of the genus Deroceras be counted to the family of slugs ( Agriolimacidae ). The genus Deroceras currently comprises more than 50 different species. To date, new species are discovered that are attributed to the genus Deroceras. It is expected that more species are discovered. Deroceras is thus the most species-rich genus among the slugs. It is divided by some authors into sub- genres, which in turn is not recognized by other authors, or are otherwise considered. Schileyko (2003) recognized five subgenera: D. ( Deroceras ) Rafinesque, 1820, D. ( Nipponolimax ) Yamaguchi & Have, 1955, D. ( Plathystimlus ) Wiktor, 1973, D. ( Agriolimax ) Mörch, 1865 and D. ( Liolytopelte ) Simroth, 1901. Kerney et al. (1990 ) call D. ( Deroceras ) Rafinesque, 1820, D. ( Malino ) Gray, 1855, D. ( Plathystimlus ) Wiktor, 1973, D. ( Agriolimax ) Mörch, 1865 and D. ( Liolytopelte ) Simroth, 1901. The website " Molluscs of Central Europe" proposes a third partition before: D. ( Deroceras ) Rafinesque, 1820, D. ( Chorolimax ) Westerlund, 1894, D. ( Agriolimax ) Mörch, 1865, D. ( Malino ) Gray, 1855 D. ( Liolytopelte ) Simroth, 1901, " Deroceras ( subgenus not known ) Rafinesque, 1820 ". The following style selection, the subgenera have therefore not been used.
