Desafinado

Desafinado ( Portuguese for detuned ) is a bossa nova title of the Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim from 1958; the text written by the poet and pianist Newton Mendonça. The Americans Jon Hendricks and Jesse Cavanagh translated the text into English, entitled Slightly out of Tune.

Genesis

The piece was an ironic response to the Jobim's music critics, who felt after listening to the single Chega de Saudade in the summer of 1958 that the bossa nova total " out of tune " and that is no matter for loud crooner. The piece was presented very intimate and quiet in the original. It was founded by João Gilberto on a single in November 1958 published ( Chega de Saudade on his album in 1959 ). The text contains the word " bossa nova " for the first time.

Effect story

' Desafinado was recorded in 1961 by Herbie Mann and Herb Ellis. 1962 Desafinado was the recording of Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd on their album Jazz Samba very quickly become a hit, was also known internationally and contributed to the worldwide success of the bossa nova with. First English vocal versions put Pat Thomas and Ella Fitzgerald before in the same year; also occurred in 1962 still to recordings by Herb Alpert, Dizzy Gillespie ( with Lalo Schifrin, Dizzy on the French Riviera ), Coleman Hawkins and Quincy Jones. For his version with the group of Byrd Getz received at the Grammys 1963, the award for best jazz instrumental performance - a soloist or small group.
