Desert Inn

The Desert Inn was a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. When it was opened on 24 April 1950, there was the fifth hotel on the Strip. The architect was the New York Jac Lessman.

History

Foundation

The project was funded by Wilbur Clark, but the money ran out; the Mobster Alfred " The Owl " Polizzi and Moe Dalitz a jumped. Dalitz and Polizzi had access to funds from the American National Insurance Company ( ANICO ). Dalitz became a man in the background while Clark remained the official face in the foreground.

Like many other casinos had the Desert inn so under control of gangsters. As this infiltration in Las Vegas was no longer acceptable, Dalitz sold his shares to Howard Hughes.

Hughes had come to Las Vegas in 1966 and had two complete floors rented. On March 1, 1967 Dalitz sold the Desert Inn for 13 million U.S. dollars. This was the beginning of further purchases of similar complexes by Hughes in Las Vegas.

Decline

The hotel was purchased in April 2000 by Steve Wynn, who closed it a few months later. On 23 October 2001 began the demolition work to make way for a new resort. Today on the site is the Wynn Las Vegas.

To date, the Desert Inn Road in Las Vegas exists, an east -west connection of the city. There are currently no plans to change the name of the street.

Trivia

The Desert Inn was also known by use in movies. So Frankie and his cronies was filmed here. The opening scene from Sister Act 2 was filmed in the ball room of the hotel. Recently, the hotel was used in the movie Rush Hour 2, where it appeared as a hotel "Red Dragon" with an Asian theme. In addition, there were, among other things Elvis Presley, Paul Anka and Frank Sinatra at the casino on.

Furthermore, was the Desert Inn from 1978 to 1981 the scene of Aaron Spelling detective series Vega $ with Robert Urich in the lead role of private detective Dan Tanna, who works for the fictional owner Philip Roth.
