Desert locust

Desert locust ( Schistocerca gregaria )

The desert locust ( Schistocerca gregaria ) is one of the species that are called locusts. It is a small, inconspicuous as a single animal locust that travels in flocks of up to 50 million animals.

Way of life

After mating, the female lays 20-80 eggs in a foam column in the earth. The foam column hardens, thereby protecting the eggs.

The life of the animals takes place in two phases, the single-phase ( Solitaria - phase) and the swarm phase ( phase gregaria ). In the single phase all animals of the same species are local. If the conditions are especially good for a generation, it can happen that enough larvae develop, that it will be too tight in the current habitat for the entire population and the locusts begin to wander. In the swarm phase, the same animals their behavior completely against one another, which does not change the direction of travel of the swarm.
