Deshaies

Deshaies is a municipality with 4356 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe.

Geography

Deshaies is in the northwest of the archipelago of Guadeloupe.

From the history

The place existed in the 17th century under the name Des Hayes. There, for the protection of the settlement a castle was built. Today Deshaies is a member of the Communauté de communes du Nord Basse Terre.

Monuments

In Deshaies there is a botanical and an orchid garden. They are called Le jardin botanique de Deshaies officially and Le jardin des orchidées.
