Desmomys

The Harrington rats ( Desmomys ) are a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes two species.

These rodents reach a body length of about 12 centimeters, which must be added an average of 15 centimeters long tail comes. The coat color is light gray at the top yellowish- gray and at the bottom. In their physique, they resemble closely related furrows tooth -Bach rats ( Pelomys ).

Harrington rats are endemic to Ethiopia, they inhabit upland areas in 1800 to 2800 meters above sea level. They often live in marshy regions, but can also be good at climbing trees. Otherwise, very little is known about their way of life.

There are two types:

• Desmomys harringtoni is located in western Ethiopia. The species is widespread and common.
• Desmomys yaldeni was not described until 2003. It inhabits a small area in south-western Ethiopia and is managed by the IUCN as " critically endangered " ( endangered ) listed.

Systematically, they are classified within the Altweltmäuse in the Arvicanthis group.
