DeSoto Diplomat

The DeSoto Diplomat was a Chrysler product that was manufactured for export only. The DeSoto Diplomat was primarily attributable to badge engineering from Chrysler and Plymouth vehicles. They were made in both the plants in Detroit and in Windsor ( Ontario).

The export DeSoto based on a Plymouth was first introduced in 1937 and manufactured exclusively in Detroit. Only at the end of the model year 1939 Chrysler in Canada began with the construction of this car.

Since 1946, the export DeSoto DeSoto Diplomat was called. He has been delivered to Europe, South Africa, South America, Hawaii and Australia. In model year 1955 Chrysler Canada put forth no export vehicles, so all 1955 Diplomat came from Detroit. In the late 1950s some European taxi drivers preferred a diesel engine Perkins (type P 4 C) for their diplomat; these diesel engines were used in an assembly line in Belgium in the car.

From 1938 to 1956 Plymouth bodies were used for the export DeSoto, which were equipped with a grille that resembled those of the other DeSoto but fit into the recess of Plymouth. From 1957 to 1959, the DeSoto Diplomat had the front of the DeSoto sweep that was added to the Plymouth body.

In the model years 1960 and 1961, the Diplomat was based on the large Dodge Dart. Although in 1960 the production of DeSoto in Canada and in 1961 set in the United States, some DeSoto Diplomat in 1962, which were based on the sedan version of the Dodge Dart 440 originated in South Africa.
