DeSoto Parish, Louisiana

The De Soto Parish (French: Paroisse De Soto ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 26 656 inhabitants and a population density of 11.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Mansfield.

De Soto Parish is part of the metropolitan Shreveport- Bossier City on the Red River.

Geography

History

The De Soto Parish was formed in 1843 from parts of Caddo Parish and Natchitoches Parish. It was named after Hernando de Soto (about 1500-1542 ), leader of the first white men on the Mississippi.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in De Soto Parish 25,494 people in 9,691 households and 6,967 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer.
