DeSoto Parish, Louisiana
The De Soto Parish (French: Paroisse De Soto ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 26 656 inhabitants and a population density of 11.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Mansfield.
De Soto Parish is part of the metropolitan Shreveport- Bossier City on the Red River.
Geography
The Parish is located in Northwest Louisiana, cross to the west by Texas, is located in the north about 80 miles from Arkansas and has an area of 2317 square kilometers, of which 45 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes and Counties:

History
The De Soto Parish was formed in 1843 from parts of Caddo Parish and Natchitoches Parish. It was named after Hernando de Soto (about 1500-1542 ), leader of the first white men on the Mississippi.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in De Soto Parish 25,494 people in 9,691 households and 6,967 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 55.97 percent White, 42.16 percent Black or African American, 0.51 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.54 percent from other races groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 9,691 households out of which 33.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.7 percent were married couples living together, 18.6 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent of all households and 11.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.11.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 28.4 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,252, and the median income for a family was $ 33,196. Males have a median income of $ 30,780, women $ 20,182. The per capita income was $ 13,606. 21.0 percent of families 25.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 33.8 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 24.9 percent of those 65 years.
