Detarium senegalense, Drawing inflorescence and fruit

Detarium is a plant genus in the subfamily of carob plants ( Caesalpinioideae ) within the legume family ( Fabaceae ). The three species are native to tropical Africa.

Description

The Detarium species grow as trees.

Dissemination

All three Detarium species are native in tropical Africa.

Use

The very vitamin C rich legume of Detarium senegalense is eaten or processed into a bright green juice drink.

The wood of Detarium senegalense is mainly used for cabinet making and for veneers and hardwood flooring.

System

The genus was erected Detarium plantarum by the French botanist Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in 1789 in generations. The genus belongs to the tribe Detarium Detarieae in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae in the family Fabaceae.
