Dětmar

Thietmar of Prague (also: Dietmar; Czech: Dětmar; † January 2 982 in Prague) was the first bishop of Prague.

Life

In the year 973 succeeded Prince Boleslav II to establish a bishopric for Bohemia in Prague. For the first bishop of the newly erected diocese he determined Thietmar, a Saxon monk. This came from a Benedictine monastery, probably from Corvey, and stayed for some time in Prague. He was said to be articulate and educated and also mastered the language of the Czech population. This was necessary according to the Church Council for the inauguration. The Assembly of the Czech Grand confirmed the election of the princes. In January 976 Thietmar was ordained in the Alsatian Brumath of Archbishop of Mainz Willigis.

Over his tenure, few details are known. Cosmas of Prague reported only in general terms that Thietmar spread the Christian doctrine in the country and strengthened and provided for the construction of new churches. During his tenure, the first convent in Bohemia was founded the Benedictine monastery of St. George at Prague Castle. Thietmar death consign John Canaparius and Bruno of cross- ford, the hagiographers of his successor Adalbert.
