Detroit is a city in Red River County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the west of the county, in northeast Texas, about 15 miles from Oklahoma to the north away and has a total area of 4.1 km ² without significant water surface.

History

After completion of the railway line of the Texas and Pacific Railway in the area, the city was founded in 1876 as Bennett. In 1887 it was renamed by JM Stephens, the local representative of the railway company in Detroit, after his hometown in Michigan. Due to its favorable location on the railway line in the town developed quickly to a merchant and cargo center of the area.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 776 people in 315 households and 217 families. The population density was 189.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 78.35 % White, 16.49% Black or African American, 0.64 % Native American, 0.00 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 1.68 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.84% were Mixed Race and 2.58 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 315 households 33.0 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.6 % were married couples living together. 16.2% were single mothers and 31.1% were non-families. 29.5 % of all households were single-person households, and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size amounted to 3.06.

29.4 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.5 % from 18 to 24, 25.6% 25-44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 83.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 80.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,250, and the median income for a family $ 31,136. Males had a median income of $ 23,750 versus $ 17,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,331. 24.0 % of the population and 20.8 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 34.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.8 % of those 65 or older.
