Deuterocohnia

Deuterocohnia lorentziana with long -tube, green flowers.

Deuterocohnia is a plant genus in the subfamily Pitcairnioideae within the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ). The approximately 19 species occur in the South American Andes.

Description

The Deuterocohnia species are perennial, terrestrial or rarely lithophytic living xerophytes. They form strong, sprossbürtige roots. The stemless clump -forming plants grow by Kindel. The often thick, succulent leaves are in a basal, dense rosette. The rosettes of species that have been assigned to the genus Abromeitiella earlier, have only diameter and plant height of several centimeters; they make great pads. The types according to the old, smaller circumference of the genus Deuterocohnia form rosettes of about 1 meter in diameter. The rigid leaves terminate in a sharp point. At least the lower leaf surface has white scales ( trichomes ). The leaf margins are thorny sawn, with a very different depending on the type large thorns.

The inflorescences in some woody species and form over several years flowers - an exception in the family of Bromeliaceae. The simple or compound from aged men part inflorescences inflorescences are depending on only a few centimeters (ie compressed ) to more than 1 m ( with long Blütenstandsschäften ) high. The radial symmetry, the threefold flowers are hermaphrodite with double perianth. There are three sepals present. The three free petals are yellow to green, rarely up red. There are two circles, each with three free, fertile stamens present. Three carpels are fused into a superior ovaries.

Are formed dreifächerige capsule fruits that contain many winged seeds. The seed dispersal is carried by the wind.

Occurrence

The distribution of Deuterocohnia species is the South American Andes. Centers of distribution are the Andes in Peru, Chile, southern Bolivia and northern Argentina. They thrive on low rainfall and intense radiation slopes and dry valleys ( arid climate ).

System

The genus Deuterocohnia was erected in 1894 by Carl Christian Mez in the Flora Brasiliensis. The genus name honors the German botanist Ferdinand Julius Cohn and microbiologist ( 1828-1898 ). It was a genus Cohnia present, by the Greek prefix deuteros for " second ", a new name was formed ( Cohnia Kunth synonym of Cordyline Comm. R.Br. ex and Cohnia Rchb f. Synonym of Oncidium Sw. ).

In the generic monograph by Smith & Downs (1974-1979) seven species are listed. By Spencer & Smith ( 1992) the species of the genus Abromeitiella Deuterocohnia have been assigned. The systematics of this group has been controversial, a German research project this ended in 2009 and confirmed the merger of the two genera.

Today includes about 19 species in the genus Deuterocohnia:
