Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut

The German Geodetic Research Institute ( DGFI ) is an autonomous and independent research institution based in Munich. It is the German Geodetic Commission attached at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and is funded by the State of Bavaria.

Focus of the work is the higher geodesy. These include the geometric and gravimetric methods of observation, geodetic reference systems and the determination of the shape of the earth's surface, the orientation of the Earth in space ( Earth's rotation ) and the Earth's gravity with their temporal variations that are mainly for the quantitative assessment of global change of meaning.

DGFI was founded in 1951 and initially consisted of two divisions, a Division I for Theoretical Geodesy in Munich and the Institute for Applied Geodesy ( IfAG ) in Frankfurt, Germany as a division II The latter was dissolved in 1997 by the DGFI and the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG ) converted.

International DGFI in the International Association of Geodesy (IAG ) is involved, especially in the scientific services, such as the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service ( IERS ).
