Devdas (Hindi: देवदास, Devadas ) is a Hindi film directed by Bimal Roy in 1955.

Action

Devdas and Parvati are good friends since childhood and always led a lively relationship, even if both were quite selfish. Since Devdas was even as a child a little scamp, his father sent him to Calcutta. After Devdas has grown up, he returns. For him an educated man has become, now plans to marry Paro, but his father makes his plans to naught, and only one reason: Paro comes from a less well-off parents.

One day Devdas Paro equips secretly and in the middle of the night from a visit. It proposes to run away from home with Devdas. Devdas, which this can not agree with it, she tries to dissuade from this proposal. The now resentful Parvati rejects his advances, with Devdas beats furiously with a stick. But immediately Devdas tears a piece of cloth from his clothes to patch up Paro. And Paro recognizes that Devdas on one hand is their problem but at the same time is also their medicine. The resulting scar remains the only tangible sign of their love.

Paro is married to a widower and Devdas flees to Kolkata. His friend Chunni Babu takes him to a brothel, where Devdas meets Chandramukhi. Chandramukhi is very touched when Devdas is their money without taking a " return " to complete. She falls in love with him. Devdas however, is she unwittingly used as emotional support and already addicted to alcohol, they repel each time.

His hopeless passion for Devdas Paro can only sink deeper. Unlike Chandramukhi, which leaves her past behind them to change their lives. Devdas has not the will to change things. Although he now acknowledges Chandramukhi, he can offer her nothing more. He is taking a train trip across India. Desperate, he flees from himself He dies to have ever seen again without Paro.

Background

Devdas is the sixth film adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel by and a remake of Devdas film version of PC Barua in 1935, was in Bimal Roy cameraman. It is Barua and dedicated to the 1935er Devdas actor KL Saigal.

The film songs are sung by Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt, Talat Mahmood, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Mubarak Begum; the lyrics are from Sahir Ludhianvi.
