The eight planning regions in Romania (Romanian Regiunile de dezvoltare ale României ) were called on EU membership on the basis of Law 151/1998 as part of the preparation into being in 1998. Administratively, Romania in 41 counties (Romanian Judet, pl. Judeţe ) and the capital Bucharest is divided. In the planning regions each several circuits are summarized. Part, the classification according to the historical regions of Romania, in part, these were ignored.

The planning regions were transferred no real major powers, since it does not concern administrative and territorial units with them. You have no legal personality and have been constituted by an agreement, which was signed by the representatives of the respective district councils and the City Council of Bucharest. Critics point out that the summary of the circles is not always consistent and more concealment regional disparities promotes, rather than to make this plain sight.

For regional comparison be the combined values of the Southern Region and the Capital Region: 36 274 km ² in area; 5.537 million inhabitants; 152.6 inhabitants per km ²; 4935 GDP per capita in euros.
