Devil sticks

A Devilstick (rarely referred to by the German translation Devil Staff) is a juggling equipment. It consists of an approximately 50-80 cm long, round wooden stick, which tapers towards the center. The Juggler keeps using two thin, about 40 cm long rubber-coated ( eg with a silicone jacket coated ) Hand sticks ( " sticks " ) the Devilstick by moving back and Herschlagen or endeavor, turning and throwing in the air.

Often the devil stick is covered with shiny foil or fabric ribbon. To make it easier for beginners to play, have the so-called " beginner sticks " a rougher surface (usually tape -like adhesive tape) that adheres better to the hand sticks than the smooth film.

Flower sticks

Often have these sticks ruffles made of rubber at the ends ( as shown on the right), where the name commonly used "Flower Stick" originates. These are also partly provided with a helical profile, for example from clothesline or tape.

Meanwhile, the "Flower Stick" has established itself as a separate variant. Usually it consists of a coated with silicone fiberglass rod, the wrapping ( frilly) is made of leather. The opposite of the former Gummiumwicklung softer leather shift the focus, thus preventing the rotation around its own axis. Also is absorbed in this manner, the vibration of the glass fiber rod. Playing with Flower Stick is no longer just a beginner version of the Devilstick, the Flower Stick enables rather a completely new range of tricks. This fact can be explained by the fact that all tricks where a hand hooking the rod to the wrapping is necessary, are not possible in the normal Devilstick.

Fire devil sticks

In addition to the "normal" Devilstick there is also the fire devil stick. This has a Kevlar fabric - wick, which must be soaked before lighting in conventional lamp oil at both ends.

Other variants

Besides the known variants of the basic shape ( rod) have remained true, in recent times, also completely new, experimental forms have been established. This includes, for example, the so-called " Devils Triangle " ( Devil's Triangle ), consisting of three equal-length rods that form an isosceles triangle. The Devils Triangle was developed in June 1997 by the American Seth Golub.

Jolleystick

When Jolleystick game a Devilstick is back played over a net into the opponent's field and. The name is derived from the words of juggling, volleyball and Devilstick. It is a fascinating game in which the two players at least have to master propeller throws. Jolleystick is held loosely organized as the European Championship EJC (European Jolleystick Competition), most recently during the EJC 2008 ( here: European Juggling Convention ) in Karlsruhe.

Origin

The Devilstick has its origin in China and was probably invented in the 16th century, however, the Devilstick likely to have been already invented thousands of years ago. In China it is called " Hua Kun" ( " Flowery Stock "). Played originally with three bamboo sticks, two thinner hand sticks and a thicker, each with a tassel ( flower) at the ends. It has been used, inter alia, as the clock instrument in folk dances and Chinese opera.

The name " Devil Stick " has nothing to do with the devil and comes from the Greek diaballo = back and forth throw.
