Devota

Devota or Deivota (* 283, † 304 in Mariana, Corsica ) is a legendary Christian martyr and saint.

From their lives lack secured sources, the first written reference dates from the year 1070. According to legend, she was tortured under the Roman Emperor Diocletian to death. Her body was to be brought by ship from Corsica to Africa. According to legend, came a few hours after the departure of a storm, then emerged from the mouth of the saints a white dove, which led the boat to the coast of present-day Monaco. There, the landing on 27 January 304 in the vicinity of today's Devota Church should be done.

In her memory the Church of Sainte- Devote was built.

She is the patron saint of Monaco and Corsica. Every year a boat is burned in front of the church in memory of the saint on the evening of January 26.
