Devrim

Devrim ( dt: Revolution) was the first car that was designed and manufactured in Turkey.

Since 1960 there were plans for a native Turkish automobile production. 1961 prompted President Cemal Gursel that 24 engineers were drawn from different factories for the project to develop a Turkish car and produce. It should be presented to the public on Republic Day on 29 October 1961. Among the engineers was also the later Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan.

After four and a half months, four prototypes of the vehicle were completed, one in black color and three cream-colored. The model was named Devrim - the Turkish word for " revolution."

Three of the vehicles were transported to the days of the Republic by train to Ankara, while the black model has been painted while driving. For security reasons, the cars were filled only with a minimum of fuel for maneuvering. During the festivities President Gursel should turn a lap of honor around the parliament building with the black car, but it was already after about 100 meters with an empty tank stand. Gursel moved into a creamy white Devrims and drove up to Anitkabir mausoleum.

Due to these events, while presenting the Devrim was for years the occasion for jokes and ridicule. The press wrote: " The Devrim drove 100 meters and stopped. "

The Devrim was never produced in series, partly because of the handmade prototypes templates hardly documents or technical drawings. Another reason was the lack of demand; during this time were cars for the masses of potential private buyer not yet affordable. A conspiracy theory about this fact, however, speculates influence of large U.S. car manufacturers on the Turkish government.

Three of the prototypes were destroyed; the only remaining is stored in Eskişehir in the company TÜLOMSAS, where he had been built at that time.
