Dewey County (Oklahoma)
The Dewey County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. In the census in 2010, the County had 4,810 inhabitants and a population density of 1.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Taloga.
Geography
The County is located in northwestern Oklahoma, is located in the west about 60 miles from Texas and has an area of 2611 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
The Dewey County was formed in 1892 as an original county of free territory. It was named after its former status as d county. The County ( Oklahoma Land Run ) was settled by white settlers during the third official land ownership acquisition of 19 April 1892. During the same year, the first post office was opened. It was named after Admiral George Dewey.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Dewey County 4,743 people in 1,962 households and 1,336 families. The population density was 1.8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 92.16 percent White, 0.13 percent African American, 4.64 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.72 percent from other races groups; 2.28 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.68 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 1,962 households, 26.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 5.0 percent were single mothers. 31.9 percent were non-families, 30.0 percent of all households and 16.4 percent of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size is 2.93.
23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1 percent between 18 to 24, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44, 25.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,172, and the median income for a family was $ 36,114. Males had a median income of $ 26,675 versus $ 18,548 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,806. 11.4 percent of families and 15.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
