DeWitt County (Illinois)

The DeWitt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 16,561 inhabitants and a population density of 16.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Clinton.

Geography

The County is located in the middle of Illinois and has an area of 1,030 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water surface.

The county is drained by Salt Creek, which is dammed in between Clinton and Farmer City to Lake Clinton.

History

The area of present-day DeWitt County was settled around 1820 and formed on March 1, 1839, from the Macon County. It was named after DeWitt Clinton, an American statesman, lawyer, mayor of New York City and Governor of the State of New York. Illinois is the only state in the U.S., has appointed two counties according to a personality: DeWitt County and Clinton County.

During the 1840s, Abraham Lincoln had a law firm in Clinton.

According to the census in 2010 lived in DeWitt County 16,561 people in 6811 households. The population density was 16.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 6811 households lived statistically 2.45 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 97.5 percent white, 0.7 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.2 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

22.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.1 percent were 65 years or older. 50.4 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 45,347. The per capita income was $ 24,320. 8.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
