Dhamar, Yemen

Government

Dhamar (Arabic ذمار, Damar DMG ) is a city in Yemen and the capital of the province of the same name. It is located about 100 km south of Sanaa, at about 2400 meters above sea level on the connecting road between the state capital and several other provinces.

The city's name is on the Sabaean king Dhamar'ali Yuhabirr, who ruled around 200 AD and founded the city, go back. A variety of Sabean and himjaritischer legacies can be inspected. The city was a center of the Arab-Islamic culture and science. Their large mosque was built in the time of Caliph Abu Bakr. Peculiar is the intensive arms trade in the Old Town Souk.

Dhamar came in March 2011 in the headlines, as about 10,000 people took to the streets to protest against President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose hometown is Dhamar.

The University of Dhamar is one of the largest in the country.
