Dhanvantari

Dhanvantari (Sanskrit धन्वन्तरि dhanvantari ) applies in Hindu mythology as the physician of the gods and source of all healing arts.

In one version of the tradition Indra sent him to Earth, where he ( formerly Benares Varanasi ) was born as a prince in Kashi. The well-known myth of the ocean of milk, however, reported on his appearance from the ancient sea. But even the most ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas mention Dhanvantari, who is associated with herbs and medicine. The Puranas, ancient writings about the gods, describe him as an incarnation of Vishnu. Especially followers of the ancient Indian medicine, Ayurveda, viewing him as their patron god. However, his worship is confined predominantly to the south of India, in the north there is no Dhanvantari temple.
