Dharmacakra

Dharmachakra (Sanskrit, m, धर्मचक्र, dharmacakra, ie: . Dharmatschakra, the " Wheel of Law " of chakra = wheel and Dharma = law ) is the symbol of Buddhism preached by Buddha teaching.

Dharma Wheel is usually represented with eight spokes, symbolizing the " Eightfold Path " to liberation.

In 1947, on the initiative of the Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on the basis of the dharmachakra a wheel with 24 spokes as an emblem in the flag of India. This symbolism goes back to the reign of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC, who had represented in his entire empire on pillars of the dharmachakra as a sign of the reign of ( Buddhist ) Law.

After the transformation of Sri Lanka into a republic on 22 May 1972, the Dharmachakra has also been included in the official state emblem of Sri Lanka. Also in the seal of the Tibetan government in exile there is a Dharmachakra.
