Diadema is a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and is located south of São Paulo. In the year 2006 there were 395 333 people in Diadema 30.65 km ². The city is characterized by one of the highest population densities in Brazil. The urban area is 70% of favelas.

History

Until the 1940s were on the present area the places Piraporinha, Eldorado, Taboão and Vila Conceição, who belonged administratively to São Bernardo. Its proximity to the city of São Paulo and from the late 1940s, rapidly progressive industrialization, the population began to rise, the four places grew together geographically. In 1948, the Distrito Diadema (district Diadema ) was founded. In a referendum, the population decided on 24 December 1958 the self-government. In 1959 the first elections were held in the city government. This year is officially time the city was founded. On 10 January 1960, the first mayor of Diadema took office.

Beginning of the 21st century was Diadema as one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil. Average of two people per day were killed by violent crime. Among other things, by a stricter regime of curfews of restaurants and a community-based organization of the police succeeded by 103 to reduce the murder rate by 2005 to below 35 per 100,000 inhabitants.
