Diageo plc is a global manufacturer of alcoholic beverages. The name Diageo is composed of the Latin word for day ( this) and the Greek word for world ( geo). The company operates in more than 180 countries and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

The main markets are in Europe ( 34%) and North America ( 37%). With the equivalent of about 18 billion euros in annual sales and a sales volume of 960 million liters in 2012 Diageo is the world's largest spirits producer.


The company was formed in December 1997 through the merger of Grand Metropolitan ( International Distillers and Vintners with daughter ( IDV ) ) and Guinness ( with subsidiary United Distillers (UD) ).
