Diageo

Diageo plc is a global manufacturer of alcoholic beverages. The name Diageo is composed of the Latin word for day ( this) and the Greek word for world ( geo). The company operates in more than 180 countries and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

The main markets are in Europe ( 34%) and North America ( 37%). With the equivalent of about 18 billion euros in annual sales and a sales volume of 960 million liters in 2012 Diageo is the world's largest spirits producer.

History

The company was formed in December 1997 through the merger of Grand Metropolitan ( International Distillers and Vintners with daughter ( IDV ) ) and Guinness ( with subsidiary United Distillers (UD) ). By 2002, IDV and UD were the Diageo subsidiary United Distillers and Vintners ( UDV ), which has now risen again in Diageo.

Diageo is the successor company of the British thalidomide licensee Distillers Company ( Biochemicals) Limited ( DCBL ). Thalidomide was developed in Germany by the company Grunenthal and marketed in England from 14 April 1958 by DCBL under the name Distaval.
