Diamang

The Diamang ( Companhia de Diamantes de Angola) was until 1986 a company in Angola, which was concerned with the promotion and trade of rough diamonds. Founder and president of the company was the Portuguese Comandante Ernesto Vilhena.

The history of diamond production in Angola began on 16 October 1917 with the emergence of Diamang, a company that was founded with mixed capital of financial groups in Portugal, Belgium, USA, England and South Africa. Diamang dominated since the beginning of the South African De Beers Group.

Diamang in 1961 and 1962 participated in the financing of barracks and military stations and also presented in 1962 a total of 88.6 million Portuguese escudos for the beginning of the colonial war available.

The first diamond discoveries were made very early in 1590, which were then confirmed in 1909 by the geologist Narcise Janot. The first gems were found in a river in the province of Lunda Norte. At that time, Angola was still part of Portugal and was considered overseas province. In 1981, six years after independence in 1975, the Angolan authorities had gained full control of the diamond mining in the country and established by the formation of Endiama own diamond company, which had replaced the diamagnetic as a company since 1986.
