Diamantina, Minas Gerais

Diamantina is a city in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, with approximately 44,000 inhabitants and is located 284 km from Belo Horizonte. It has a total of 14 churches. During the colonial period Diamantina was an important artistic and commercial center.

History

In the 17th century, the first diamonds were found outside of Asia in Diamantina. Under the name of Arraial do Tijuco it originated as a stock of diamond hunters. 1734 settled the Portuguese royal diamonds management in place, which was also the seat of Demarcação Diamantina. Between 1739 and 1771 the gem search was contracted out to private miners, until the beginning of the 20th century it was since under state monopoly. The discovery of richer diamond deposits in South Africa from about 1870 led to an abrupt decline in search activity. This left the baroque architecture of the city to this day.

1999 by the UNESCO, the historic center of the city a World Heritage Site. 1917, the Diocese of Diamantina Diamantina to the archbishopric was charged.
