Diamond District

The Diamond District is an area in the New York district of Manhattan.

Location

The Diamond District is located at the West 47th Street between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Many New York attractions are within walking distance. Along Sixth Avenue one block north of Rockefeller Center and three blocks located north Radio City Music Hall, the Plaza Arcade, a shopping arcade, the West 47th Street Rockefeller Center connects you directly. Along Fifth Avenue, located three blocks north of St. Patrick's Cathedral and one block west is the Broadway Theater District.

History

The Diamond District was created as the diamond dealer in 1941 moved from downtown Manhattan to Midtown Manhattan. Previously, they had their shops since the 1920s in the area around Canal Street and the Bowery and at the same time since the 1930s in the Financial District near Fulton Street and Nassau Street.

When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and Belgium, Jews tried to flee to the USA, including those who worked in Antwerp and Amsterdam in the diamond trade. The latter could be followed mainly in New York City in today's Diamond District down and remained there even after the end of World War II.

Economic Importance

To date, this area is one of the most important addresses in the international diamond trade - in addition to London, Antwerp, Mumbai (India), Ramat Gan (Israel ), Johannesburg ( South Africa) and also the best place in New York to buy diamonds.

The Diamond District is the largest shopping street of diamonds in all sizes and shapes, as well as precious stones worldwide. More than 90 percent of all diamonds that are imported to the United States go through New York City and most of these by the Diamont District. Here 2,600 different companies are represented, almost all have to do with diamonds or gemstones.
