It was written for the native of Barbados singer Rihanna and is decoupled from their seventh studio album Unapologetic. The single had its premiere on 26 September 2012 during the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. Diamonds is a mid-tempo pop ballad that uses electronic and soul music. The song features drums, heavy synths, 1980 Backbeat with "light orchestral elements and electronic rhythms aware ". Lyrically Diamonds is positive and represents a departure from the theme of unhealthy relationship, which can be seen especially on some other of the previous singles from Rihanna.
After the release of Diamonds, the single debuted in the top ten of sixteen countries and reached number one in Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Scotland and the United Kingdom. In the United States the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, on the Hot R & B charts and the Hot R & B / Hip- Hop charts and thus became their 12th number-one hit in the U.S..
