Diane Ackerman

Diane Ackerman ( born October 7, 1948 in Waukegan, Illinois) is an American writer and poet. Best known her book A Natural History of the Senses ( published in German as The Mystery of the Senses ). In terms of their books on natural history can be her style best described as a mixture of poetry, stories and popular science. She taught at various universities, including Columbia University and Cornell University. Her essays appear regularly in prestigious journals.

Life and professional career

By the age of eight years, Diane Ackerman grew up in Waukegan on in the state of Illinois, then moved to Allentown in Pennsylvania with her family. At the Pennsylvania State University, she received her BA in English, then at Cornell University MA, MFA and Ph.D (1978). Her dissertation was supervised by Carl Sagan. She has taught over the years at the University of Pittsburgh, at Cornell, at Washington University in St. Louis as well as various colleges. Diane Ackerman married in 1970 to novelist Paul West. She currently lives in New York State.

A collection of her manuscripts, writings and other documents shall be kept under the directory - name The Diane Ackerman Papers, 1971-1997 in the Library of Cornell University. Ackerman's book A Natural History of the Senses was the basis for the five -part television series Mystery of the Senses, which was supervised by her.

Among the awards and honors she received include: an academic honorary degree of Kenyon College, the Orion Book Award, the John Burroughs Nature Award, and the Lavan Poetry Prize. The New York Public Library called her a " lioness of the literature." A molecule was named after her, the Dianeackerone. The Orion Book Award she received in 2008 for her book The Zookeper 's Wife.
