Dick Johnson (clarinetist)

Dick Johnson ( born December 1, 1925 in Brockton, Massachusetts, † January 10, 2010 in Boston, Massachusetts, actually Richard Brown Johnson ) was an American jazz alto saxophonist - modern jazz.

Dick Johnson played sixteen year clarinet, alto saxophone at age 19. He studied at the New England Conservatory and played at the beginning of his career with Herb Pomeroy in 1959 and took up with Eddie Costa.

In the 1980s, he had a comeback with his own bands and a duo with Dave McKenna, with whom he recorded disks on the Concord label in the style of mainstream jazz. He also played in this time with Woody Herman; in the 1990s, Johnson was involved in recordings by George Masso and Ed Sainton.

His other instruments included the flute and soprano saxophone.
