Dickie Dare

Dickie Dare was the first created by Milton Caniff comic strip. The comic, which was published in various newspapers from 1933 to 1961, is considered the precursor of Caniffs strip Terry and the Pirates.

Plot and the characters

Title hero is the twelve year old Dickie, who experienced at first in his imagination numerous adventures with Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe and various other protagonists. In the spring of 1934, it is the adult writer Dan Flynn, a friend of Dickie 's father, set aside, with whom he becomes involved together in actual adventure. While Dickie occurs as a twelve year old in the early years, he has matured at the end of the officer candidates.

Publication and draftsman

The first adventure of Dickie Dare was released on 31 July 1933. Having Caniff, who had previously worked before in other series, had given up the series in the fall of 1934 for his work on Terry and the Pirates (the last drawn by Caniff episode was released on 1 December. , 1934 ), it was taken over by Coulton Waugh. In 1944, the comic strip by Waugh's assistant Mabel Odin Burvik was continued. She was followed by Frank Matera, who was in turn replaced by Waugh. This gave Dickie Dare up to its setting in the year 1961.

Importance

With Dickie Dare succeeded Caniff to gain the attention of the publisher Joseph Medill Patterson, the Caniff hiring away to draw for its newspapers with Terry and the Pirates, a new daily strip. The constellation adult daredevil with youthful companions, as it was given from the spring of 1934, Dickie Dare, was also the starting constellation of Terry and the Pirates, only the hair color of the two main characters was changed. Dan Flynn was added by Caniff on the advice of a newspaper publisher who had pointed out to him that in particular the adult buyer of the newspaper should be addressed by the comic strip.
