Copper oxychloride is a chemical compound of copper hydroxide and chlorine.

Production

Copper oxychloride can be prepared by hydrolysis of a copper ( II) chloride.

Or

Industrially it is produced by the oxidation of copper (I ) chloride in a brine solution. To copper ( II) chloride is reduced to a concentrated solution of sodium chloride with copper metal. The resulting copper ( I) chloride is then heated and oxidized in air to copper oxychloride.

Use

Copper oxychloride is used as a contact fungicide.

The approval of copper oxychloride as one of several " copper compounds " by the EU Commission took effect December 1, 2009 for applications as a bactericide and fungicide.

In Germany pesticides are approved with this drug for Growing of pome fruits and strawberries. In Austria and Switzerland, copper oxychloride preparations of potatoes and vines, and a variety of fruits, berries and vegetables are allowed.
