DICT

DICT is a network protocol for transmission of dictionary entries. It was developed by the DICT Development Group, to replace the previously common, proprietary Webster protocol and to users to enable the simultaneous interrogation of multiple dictionaries. The specifications of the DICT protocol defined in RFC 2229.

Among the most famous DICT clients are now kdict ( for KDE), the GNOME Dictionary ( for GNOME), OmniDictionary ( for Mac OS X) and the Dict extension for Mozilla.
