Dictionary of National Biography
The Dictionary of National Biography (DNB ) and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography ( ODNB ) are biographical standard works on British history.
The Dictionary of National Biography was published from 1885 to 1900 and consisted of 63 volumes. Volumes 1 to 26 were edited by Leslie Stephen (from band 22 together with Sidney Lee); from Volume 27, Lee was the sole publisher.
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography was published in 2004 in the Oxford University Press in 60 volumes ( ISBN 0 - 19-861411 -X) and online; therein are recorded more than 50,000 biographies. In addition to personal and institutional subscribers to the online version is accessible to most users of public libraries Britain by entering their user number.
