Dictionary of New Zealand Biography

The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography ( DNZB ), also known as The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography known, is a New Zealand dictionary with over 3,000 biographies of New Zealanders who died tragically significant. Initially published only in printed form, biographies of New Zealand personalities are made today on a website of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage ( Ministry of Culture ) to the public.

History

Dictionary as a book

The first edition of the Dictionary 's appeared in 1990, edited by the publisher Allen & Unwin in association with the Department of Internal Affairs ( Interior). It was published as Volume 1, covering the years from 1769 to 1869. The second volume, which covered the years 1870 to 1900, followed by 1993. Volumes 3 and 4 followed in the years 1996 and 1999. Band 5 appeared in 2000 and ended up being the last band in printed form. Parallel to the English editions, the volumes were translated into Māori and published under the name Nga Tangata Taumata Rau.

Dictionary as an online database

In 2002, the DNZB was introduced as an online database of the public and to reach under your own domain address dnzb.govt.nz online. Later, the web portal of the DNZB were integrated in the web portal of Te Ara and over 900 biographies of An Encyclopaedia of New Zealand of 1966.

Today

On July 4, 2011 Nga Tangata Taumata Rau was issued with all the biographies of the years 1869-1960 in Māori as an e -book and presented to the public as part of the Māori language week.

Today, the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography provides in addition to a convenient product search the opportunity to participate in the project. The portal was placed under Creative Commons Attribution- NonCommercial 3.0 New Zealand Licence.
